Participation of UXAFORES members in two Biodiversity Foundation projects that begin in 2024

UXAFORES members will participate in two of the projects approved by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in the call for the promotion of the forestry bioeconomy 2023. The projects will be conducted in 2024-2025 within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) funded by the European Union-NextGenerationEU.

The project “Laboratorio Ecosocial do Barbanza: a living laboratory for the multifunctional management and collective custody of the territory (BARBANZA ECOSOCIAL)” aims to drive the transition towards environmental sustainability and to increase the resilience of territorial management in the Barbanza area (A Coruña). The project is based on the “Laboratorio Ecosocial do Barbanza”, a living research and action lab which has been existence in the area since 2020 and that aims to become a reference centre in Europe. The project aims to integrate all agents in the forestry chain by using a multi-actor approach, reactivating abandoned areas, introducing cattle to the area and taking advantage of resources in a sustainable manner, to preserve biodiversity, activate economy and prevent forest fires.

The project is coordinated by the RIA Foundation, and in addition to the USC (CISPAC, HISTAGRA and UXAFORES groups) participants include the Platform for the Defense of the Mountain (PDM), Rianxo Council (CR), the Pablo de Olavide University and the Montescola Foundation (FME). The project has a budget of almost two million euros. More information about the project can be found on the Biodiversity Foundation website, in the BARBANZA ECOSOCIAL section.

The project “Forestry bioeconomy and water management as a revulsive for the reactivation of the northeastern regions of Granada (REVIERTE)” proposes changes throughout the entire forestry value chain, ranging from forestry ownership, silviculture and water management to the development and commercialization of a new technical wood product for a low carbon building, with the same overall goal, i.e. that better hydrological-forestry management will halt the abandonment of forest management and of the historical systems of water management in Northeast Granada.

The project is coordinated by the University of Granada, and in addition to the USC (PEMADE) participants include the Pablo de Olavide University, the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME)-Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Association of Forest Owners of Eastern Andalusia for the Sustainable Development and Conservation of Biodiversity (FORET) and the Association for Spanish Forest Certification (PEFC). More information about the project can be found on the Biodiversity Foundation website, in the REVIERTE section and in the REVIERTE project website .
