Presentation of the agreement between the USC and XERA

Public presentation of the agreement between the USC and XERA (the Galician Agency for the Forest Industry) regarding the PEMADE platform.

The agreement reached between the USC and XERA (the Galician Agency for the Forest Industry belonging to the Economy, Employment and Industry Department of Galician Regional Government, Xunta de Galicia) regarding development of PEMADE (Platform for Structural Timber Engineering) was presented during an event held at Higher Polytechnic Engineering School in Lugo on 18 November. The presentation was attended by Montserrat Valcárcel, vice-rector for Coordination of the Campus of Lugo, José Ignacio Lema, director of the Galician Agency for the Forest Industry (XERA), Óscar Andrés Quintela, representing Arrokabe Architects, and the director of PEMADE Manuel Guaita.

The director of PEMADE, Manuel Guaita, outlined the objectives that he hoped would be achieved as a result of the agreement. He emphasized the value of Galician forestry potential and the use of wood as a building resource that because of its characteristics (renewable, sustainable, reusable and recyclable) could be integrated in a circular economy.

The representative of Arrokabe Architects, Óscar Andres Quintela, presented several successful cases in Galicia where timber has been used as a structural building material.

The agreement has received funding of more than half a million euros, of which the Galician government has contributed 389,000 euros, and the project will run until 2022.

The agreement is included in the development of the “Agenda to promote the Forest Industry” designed by administration and sectors concerned with business and research.
